Sea Kayaking in Southern Croatia

Paddle in the stunning waters of the former Republic of Ragusa.

6 Days

A taste of the islands

  • Meet up at our shared villa for an overview of the trip coupled with a tasting of local cheeses and wines.

  • You will board a local ferry for a transfer to the island of Lopud. After arriving and dropping luggage, we will get on the water for some kayak orientation and basic stroke overview.

  • After breakfast you will paddle about one hour to the island of Sipan where there will be a bit more coastal exploration and snorkeling.

Lunch will be a visit to a local vineyard on Sipan where a tour and tasting will be paired with our meal.

After a bit more exploration of the island, you will climb back in the kayaks to paddle back over to Lopud island for dinner and evening relaxation.

  • Today will be a robust paddling day if conditions allow! You will circumnavigate two of the islands in the Elephiti chain, Lopud and Kalamata.

These two islands have towering limestone cliffs on the western sides contrasted by low angled pitches to the east. Seeing this contrast helps us understand their geology and the human history and habitation of the islands.

You will enjoy a picnic lunch today and likely be tired from a full day of paddling.

  • Today you can “choose your own adventure” with options including:

    • Additional kayak time and skill building

    • Hiking and sightseeing on Lopud

    • Beach lounging at one of the area’s few sandy beaches

  • After a morning on Lopud you will transfer back to Mlini for the final evening of the trip.

We will celebrate in style at our favorite local restaurant, sharing toasts with Carmen, the head chef.

  • Breakfast is included this morning for those with later flights, but it is common for onward travel to involve early morning departures. We can help arrange transportation to the Dubrovnik airport.

The Elaphiti Expedition

  • Meet up at our shared villa for an overview of the trip coupled with a tasting of local cheeses and wines.

  • After breakfast we will take a local ferry to Old Town Dubrovnik and spend the morning on a structured sightseeing tour of the town.

Visiting the walls that surround the Old Town is a vacation highlight for most and when coupled with some historical understanding of the city helps explain its prominence in the region.

After lunch in town we will transfer to Lopud island for our accommodations and optional evening paddle.

  • After breakfast you will paddle about one hour to the island of Sipan where there will be a bit more coastal exploration and snorkeling in the Blue Cave.

Lunch will be a visit to a local vineyard on Sipan where a tour and tasting will be paired with our meal.

After a bit more exploration of the island, you will climb back in the kayaks to paddle back over to Lopud island for dinner and evening relaxation.

  • After packing up, checking out, and eating breakfast we will load our kayaks and paddle north, back to the island of Sipan that we visited yesterday. Circling the island the island this time, we while we make our way to the city of Sipan Luka which is our destination for the evening.

This paddling day will provide extensive views of the limestone cliffs and shores that make these islands famous.

  • Today’s paddle will once again have us moving to a new town as we float by several of the uninhabited islands in the chain. Interestingly, we will take in a new agricultural development along the shores that is revitalizing terrace farming that is generations old.

The city of Ston on the mainland is our destination today. Ston is famous for the extensive network of walls that protected the salt farms of the city, one of the longest and most extensive fortifications in the word.

  • We will stretch our legs today exploring the cities of Ston and Mali Ston that are connected via a fortified wall. There are 7km of wall to walk here so we will need our walking shoes!

In addition to impressive history, Ston has a few great gelato shops that must be sampled!

  • After waiving goodbye to the fortifications of Ston we will pack up our kayaks again and contour along the mainland towards the next major harbor of Slano.

Slano is a long-inhabited community on the coast that has roots extending to prehistoric times. The bay is a perfect representation of Croatian harbors, providing protection for ships to shelter in during storm events.

  • After breakfast today we will load kayaks and launch into the tranquil waters of Slano bay again. Continuing our path along the mainland shoreline we are heading south towards the bay of Zaton.

Along today’s paddle we will see a number of small vacation villa’s that speckle the coastline and stop for lunch at a popular coastal beach. After lunch, there will be time to snorkel in one of our favorite hidden areas on the coastline that is accessible only by boat!

Zaton bay is the last major community before entering the zone of Dubrovnik and Mali Zaton is our destination for this evening.

  • As has now become our pattern, we will continue south, entering into the waters that surround the city of Dubrovnik.

After crossing the cruise ship and shipping channel we will stop at a beach club for lunch before continuing along the peninsular to Lapad, our destination.

Today’s paddle will be a shorter one, allowing you to have an enjoyable afternoon in Lapad, one of the best ocean front destinations in the area.

  • Today’s paddle and travel day is the last one of the trip and likely the longest!

Loading and launching out boats will put us on the water to paddle past the walls of Old Town Dubrovnik, gaining a different perspective from our walk on top of them.

After navigating some boat traffic outside of the walls, we will leave the crowds behind, heading south along a rugged coastline to regain our origin city of Mlini.

After cleaning up in our accommodations, we will celebrate in style at our favorite local restaurant, sharing toasts with Carmen, the head chef.

  • Breakfast is included this morning for those with later flights, but it is common for onward travel to involve early morning departures. We can help arrange transportation to the Dubrovnik airport.
